Growing up in Connecticut, around other Dominicans, it was one of those words that moved through the room like everybody already knew its job.

Somebody was too dark.

“Haitian.”

Somebody’s hair looked a certain way.

“Haitian.”

Somebody looked too Black, too poor, too close to whatever Dominican identity had been taught to keep at a distance.

“Haitian.”

The strange part was that it was not usually coming from white people.

A lot of the time, it came from other Dominicans.

Black Dominicans.

Darker Dominicans.

Dominicans who could stand next to a Haitian person and be read the same way by the world, but still reached for “Haitian” like it was a weapon.

Even as a kid, something about that never made sense to me.

I did not have the language for anti-Haitianism yet.

I did not have the history.

I just had the question.

Why was Haitian available as an insult?

Why did that word carry shame in people’s mouths?

Why did people say Haitian like it was supposed to lower somebody?

And why did nobody use Dominican that way?

That question stayed with me.

Years later, doing this work online, I started seeing the same reflex again.

Every time Dominican Blackness gets named directly, Haiti is never far away.

Sometimes people call me Haitian outright.

Sometimes they say it like a correction.

Sometimes they say it like an accusation.

Sometimes they do not call me Haitian directly, but they drag Haiti into a conversation where Haiti was not even the subject.

I say:

Dominicans are Black.

And somehow, Haiti enters the room.

That is not random.

That is the mechanism.

When Blackness becomes too central to the conversation, Haiti gets pulled in as the emergency boundary.

Haiti becomes the place where people try to put the Blackness they do not want to name in themselves.

The fear.

The shame.

The disorder.

The foreignness.

The racial threat.

The thing Dominican identity has been trained to push away in order to feel coherent.

That is what makes using “Haitian” as an insult so disgusting.

It is not just disrespect.

It is a whole structure speaking through one word.

Because when someone uses Haitian as an insult, they are not only insulting Haitian people.

They are revealing what they believe Haiti is supposed to represent.

More Black.

More foreign.

Less desirable.

Less civilized.

Less Dominican.

That is why the word appears so quickly when darker Dominicans speak too directly about Blackness.

That is why it shows up when Dominican Americans talk about race.

That is why it gets thrown at people who look too Black, speak too clearly, or refuse to keep the old distance intact.

It is not an argument.

It is a border.

It says:

Do not bring Blackness too close.

Put it over there.

Put it on Haiti.

But history does not respect the boundaries people invent to protect themselves from it.

My own Dominican identity does not exist cleanly on the other side of Haiti.

It begins with Haiti.

My ancestors arrived in Samaná in 1824, when Haiti controlled the island. They were free Black Americans who migrated into a political reality shaped by Haiti, before the Dominican Republic existed as the nation people recognize today.

So when people try to call me Haitian as an insult, I hear something else underneath it.

I hear the historical irony.

Because I would not be Dominican if it were not for Haiti.

That is not an insult.

That is history.

And that is part of what makes this so shameful.

People use Haitian as a slur while standing on histories they barely understand.

Some Dominicans use Haitian as an insult while having Haitian grandparents, Haitian family members, Haitian neighbors, Haitian labor, Haitian proximity, Haitian influence, or Haitian history somewhere in their own story.

They use the word like a weapon against something that may already live inside their family.

That is not pride.

That is self-amputation.

It is cutting away part of the island’s truth and pretending the wound is identity.

And no, this is not about pretending there are no political tensions, border issues, historical conflicts, or real problems between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Of course there are.

But using Haitian as an insult does not solve any of that.

It does not defend Dominican sovereignty.

It does not make Dominican identity clearer.

It does not make anybody more Dominican.

It only exposes how much of Dominican identity has been trained to need Haiti beneath it, carrying everything it refuses to name about itself.

That is the part people do not want to sit with.

Because if race is not a Dominican thing, then why does Haitian work as a racial insult?

If Dominicans are just mixed, then why does proximity to Haiti create so much anxiety?

If nationality is all that matters, then why do darker Dominicans so often have to prove their Dominicanness?

If Blackness is not being rejected, then why does Haiti appear so quickly when Blackness gets named?

The contradiction is sitting right there.

People say race does not matter.

Then they use Haitian like a racial insult.

People say Dominican identity is diverse.

Then they punish the people who look too close to Haiti.

People say Blackness is an American obsession.

Then they reach for Haiti the second Dominican Blackness enters the conversation.

At some point, the defense starts proving the thing it is trying to deny.

And this is not just online behavior.

Online comments make the pattern easier to see, but the pattern existed long before the internet.

It was in childhood jokes.

Family language.

Schoolyard insults.

Beauty standards.

Hair politics.

Border talk.

Migration panic.

The way people learn which features to soften, which histories to avoid, which side of the island to treat as shame.

That is how a mechanism becomes ordinary.

It gets repeated so often that people stop hearing it as something taught.

They start calling it culture.

But this is not culture.

This is anti-Blackness.

This is gatekeeping.

This is a Dominican identity wound being passed off as national pride.

And sometimes the structure becomes almost too clear.

A Samaná descendant once called me Haitian online.

Another Samaná descendant.

One descendant of a Black migration to Samaná trying to insult another descendant by reaching for Haiti.

That moment stayed with me because it was not just absurd.

It was the system working exactly as it was designed to work.

Even inside a community shaped by Black migration, even inside a history that cannot be honestly separated from Haiti, the reflex still appeared.

Blackness got too close.

So Haiti had to be used as distance.

That is the whole structure in miniature.

And I want to be very clear about something.

I love being Dominican.

I love the music.

The food.

The humor.

The language.

The warmth.

The family energy.

The impossible confidence.

The way Dominicans can turn any room into a social event before anybody understands how it happened.

I am proud of where my family comes from.

I am proud of Samaná.

I am proud of the story I inherited.

But using Haitian as an insult is shameful.

It is one of those things that makes everybody look worse.

It does not make Dominican identity stronger.

It makes it look fragile.

Because if your identity needs another people to be degraded in order for you to feel secure, then the problem is not them.

The problem is the story you were taught to protect.

That is why this matters.

I am not under the illusion that one essay, one video, or one thread will fix Dominican and Haitian relations.

That would be ridiculous.

But I do believe in making the structure visible.

Because once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

Once you notice how quickly Haiti appears when Dominican Blackness gets named, you start recognizing the reflex.

Once you hear Haitian being used as an insult, you start hearing what is actually being protected.

Once you understand that Haiti is being made to carry the Blackness Dominican identity keeps trying to disown, the whole conversation changes.

“Haitian” is not an insult.

It is a nationality.

A people.

A history.

A neighbor.

A country.

The first Black republic.

A place that has carried more than enough without also being turned into the dumping ground for Dominican racial anxiety.

And if Dominican identity needs Haiti to carry everything it refuses to name about Blackness, then the problem was never Haiti.

The problem was the distance Dominicans were taught to defend.

A lot of people do not actually answer the sentence.

They move sideways.

They say:

“Dominicans are Dominicans.”

Or:

“You’re not Dominican.”

At first, those sound like different responses.

But structurally, they do the exact same thing.

They avoid the actual sentence.

Because this conversation is not really about whether Dominican people exist. Nobody said Dominicans are not Dominican.

The real question is what Dominican identity contains.

What histories shaped it.

What racial structures live inside it.

Why Blackness creates such an emotional reaction when named directly.

And that is exactly where the pivot happens.

Instead of talking about Blackness, the conversation suddenly becomes about permission.

Who counts as Dominican.

Who gets to speak.

Who gets to name something uncomfortable.

That is the defense mechanism.

“Dominicans are Dominicans” sounds definitive at first.

But if you actually sit with the sentence, it says almost nothing.

It is a tautology pretending to be an argument.

Chairs are chairs.

Water is water.

Tuesday is Tuesday.

Correct.

And?

Nobody is confused about Dominican nationality.

The question is whether Dominican identity can be discussed honestly without immediately trying to seal it off from Blackness.

Because Dominican is not a race.

It is a nationality shaped by colonization, African ancestry, Indigenous survival, migration, dictatorship, anti-Haitian nationalism, class hierarchy, and centuries of racial negotiation.

That complexity is real.

Dominicans say it all the time.

“We’re mixed.”

“We’re diverse.”

“We come in all colors.”

“Our history is complicated.”

And I agree.

But I also notice something else.

Complexity is welcomed when it helps avoid Blackness.

Complexity suddenly disappears the moment a Dominican names Blackness directly.

That is where the gatekeeping begins.

Then the conversation shifts from the sentence to the speaker.

“You’re Dominican American.”

“You didn’t grow up on the island.”

“You don’t know the culture.”

“You’re Haitian.”

“You’re not a real Dominican.”

At that point, people are no longer arguing the claim itself.

They are trying to revoke the speaker’s Dominican card before the sentence has to be addressed.

And the strangest part is how quickly it happens.

I grew up Dominican enough for the food, the music, the family rules, the nicknames, the expectations, the gatherings, the pride, and the emotional chaos to shape me completely.

Nobody questioned my Dominicanity then.

But the second Blackness enters the conversation directly, suddenly people start acting like diaspora Dominicans become foreigners overnight.

That contradiction tells you everything.

Because I have noticed something over and over again online:

People will say almost anything except address the actual point.

They will call you Americanized.

They will call you Haitian.

They will call you a cocolo like it cancels history.

One person on YouTube even told me I was “not ethnically Dominican,” which is one of the funniest sentences I have ever read in my life considering my entire novel is literally about Black Dominican lineage across generations.

But none of those responses actually touch the sentence itself.

They move around it.

That is the pattern.

And honestly, that is why the attacks never really land structurally.

Because y’all keep trying to revoke my Dominican card, but Dominicans are still Black.

See how the sentence was always bigger than me?

Even if somebody dislikes my tone, my confidence, my delivery, my Americanness, my Threads posts, or the fact that I write about this publicly, none of that changes Dominican history.

The claim survives the personal attack.

That is why these conversations eventually stop feeling personal and start feeling architectural.

You begin realizing the issue is not really you.

The issue is that the inherited Dominican story becomes unstable once Blackness gets named too directly.

And the diaspora layer makes that instability even more obvious.

Because Dominican identity does not stop at the airport.

There are Dominicans in New York.

Miami.

Connecticut.

Lawrence.

Providence.

Madrid.

Amsterdam.

Dominican culture travels.

The food travels.

The music travels.

The pride travels.

The denial travels too.

So does the anti-Blackness.

So does the confusion.

That is why it always feels strange when people suddenly act like diaspora Dominicans are outsiders the second Blackness enters the conversation.

Nobody says the diaspora is fake when remittances come in.

Nobody says the diaspora is fake when a baseball player succeeds.

Nobody says the diaspora is fake during parades, concerts, elections, tourism campaigns, or moments of national pride.

Geography only becomes strict when somebody says something uncomfortable.

That is not coincidence.

And honestly, the gatekeeping can become emotionally strange after a while because diaspora identity already lives in an in-between space.

Sometimes growing up Dominican American means being reminded in the United States that you are different, foreign, ethnic, Dominican.

Then turning around and being reminded by some Dominicans that you are American the second you challenge something culturally uncomfortable.

I have even seen this quietly inside family language.

Sometimes my mother will talk about the United States and call it “tu país.”

Your country.

Not ours.

Yours.

Small sentence.

Big meaning.

And that is not me attacking my mother. That kind of split exists across a lot of diaspora families.

You grow up carrying Dominican culture completely while also understanding that your relationship to the homeland becomes conditional in certain conversations.

Especially racial ones.

Especially once Blackness enters the room.

And that is why I keep saying this is not really about culture.

I love Dominican culture.

The music.

The warmth.

The humor.

The language.

The food.

The way family gatherings turn into six-hour emotional theater productions.

The nicknames.

The pride.

The familiarity.

That is not what I am rejecting.

What I am rejecting is the inherited reflex that says the second somebody names Blackness too clearly, they stop belonging.

That is not culture.

That is gatekeeping.

And I think part of why these defense mechanisms stand out so clearly to me is because of the position I occupy inside all of this.

I am not just “a Dominican American online.”

I am a Dominican writer.

A Black Dominican.

A Samaná descendant.

An American-born descendant of Black American migration into the Dominican Republic.

A person who grew up inside Dominican culture while also growing up inside American racial reality.

That dual position changes what becomes visible.

The problem is not that I do not know Dominican culture.

The problem is that I know Dominican culture way too well.

I know the warmth.

But I also know the colorism.

I know the joy.

But I also know the “pelo malo.”

I know the pride.

But I also know the anti-Haitian jokes, the “indio,” the inherited discomfort around Blackness, and the way people learn to soften racial reality through language before they are even old enough to fully understand what they are doing.

Knowing the culture does not mean protecting every inherited reflex inside it.

Sometimes knowing the culture means finally telling the truth about it.

And that is why these two phrases fail as arguments.

“Dominicans are Dominicans” does not answer Blackness.

“You’re not Dominican” does not erase Blackness.

Both are attempts to avoid the same reality.

Dominicans are Black.

Not because every Dominican looks the same.

Not because Dominican identity is simple.

Not because the diaspora said so.

But because Dominican history, ancestry, culture, migration, memory, and social reality cannot be honestly understood without Blackness sitting structurally at the center of the story.

And if the first reaction is to close the category or revoke somebody’s Dominican card instead of addressing the sentence itself, that reaction is not a rebuttal.

It is the defense mechanism revealing itself.

And honestly, if Dominican identity were truly secure in its relationship to Blackness, the sentence would not trigger this much border control.

I just lived around both long enough for the familiarity to become impossible to ignore.

Growing up in Connecticut, most of my friends were Dominican or white. There were Black American students too, obviously, but most of the Black people around me were Dominican, so I did not really think of the cultures as separate worlds yet.

That changed when I got to college in New Haven.

Suddenly, I was around way more Black American students, and most of the close friendships I built there ended up being with Black Americans.

At first, a lot of them assumed I was Black American too.

Then they would come around my Dominican friends, my family parties, the music, the food, the jokes, the noise, the dominoes, the way everybody talks over each other, and something interesting would happen.

Nobody felt out of place.

And honestly, I felt the same thing in their spaces too.

Different music.
Different slang.
Different foods.
Different histories.

But the rhythm felt familiar.

That is the part I keep coming back to.

Not sameness.

Familiarity.

The kind that shows up before anybody explains it.

The kind you feel in the room before you fully understand why.

Because once I started moving between both spaces more regularly, I kept noticing the same social patterns showing up in different forms.

Dominicans have dominoes.

Black Americans have spades.

Different games. Same energy.

Loud debates. Competitive trash talk. Unofficial rules that somehow everybody already knows. Somebody accusing somebody else of cheating. One older person taking the whole thing way too seriously.

The details change.

The social rhythm does not.

Same thing with family gatherings.

If you have spent enough time around both cultures, you know exactly what I mean.

Somebody is cooking enough food to feed thirty-seven people even though only twelve were invited.

Music is always nearby.

At least one aunt or uncle has enough personality to control the emotional temperature of the entire room.

Nobody actually leaves when they say they are leaving.

Everybody talks over each other.

Everybody knows everybody’s business.

And somehow the playful disrespect is part of the affection.

That part especially.

One thing Dominicans and Black Americans will both do is identify your deepest insecurity in under thirty seconds and turn it into your nickname for the next fourteen years.

That is a real shared experience.

And if you survived both Dominican and Black American roasting culture as a child, your emotional durability is probably elite by now.

But even beyond the humor, there was something deeper I started recognizing.

Both cultures understand presence.

Style matters.

Personality matters.

The way you carry yourself matters.

Music is not background decoration. It is emotional atmosphere.

Food is not just food. It is memory, care, hospitality, flexing, and love all sitting on the same table.

Even heartbreak feels familiar sometimes.

Black Americans have R&B.

Dominicans have bachata.

Different sounds.

Same emotional mission.

Somebody is suffering dramatically over love while a speaker plays loud enough for the entire neighborhood to participate.

That feeling crosses language pretty easily.

And honestly, I think that is why a lot of my Black American friends felt comfortable around my Dominican spaces, and why I felt comfortable in theirs.

Nobody needed a translator for the social energy.

The forms were different, but the emotional rhythm made sense.

That does not mean the histories are identical.

They are not.

The Dominican Republic has its own history, racial dynamics, migrations, contradictions, and cultural memory.

Black American history is its own world too.

Those distinctions matter.

But I think people sometimes over-focus on difference and miss how often cultures across the African diaspora recognize each other instinctively.

Not because everything is the same.

But because certain rhythms survived in different forms.

You feel it in the humor.

You feel it in the gatherings.

You feel it in the storytelling.

You feel it in the way music moves through both spaces.

You feel it in the way elders carry authority without needing official titles.

You feel it outside the ventanita, outside the cookout, outside the corner store, outside the family function that somehow became a six-hour event.

Different settings.

Familiar energy.

And honestly, those experiences probably shaped how I think about Dominican identity more than internet discourse ever did.

Because before I had academic language for diaspora, race, migration, or Blackness, I already knew something felt recognizable between those worlds.

I had already lived it.

That is why these conversations feel so strange to me sometimes online.

People talk about Dominicans and Black Americans like they exist in completely separate emotional universes.

But that has never matched my actual experience.

The differences are real.

But so is the familiarity.

And the older I get, the more I think both groups recognize each other faster than they sometimes want to admit.

“White Dominicans exist.”

“We’re mixed.”

“You’re Haitian.”

“We identify by nationality, not race.”

At this point, the pattern is so predictable that I can almost guess the comments before they arrive.

But after watching this happen over and over again, I started noticing something more interesting than the argument itself.

The people most emotionally activated by the conversation are often not white Dominicans at all.

A lot of the strongest reactions come from Black Dominicans.

Or darker Dominicans.

Or Dominicans who would immediately be read as Black in many other contexts.

That is the part people keep skipping over.

Because the point is not that white Dominicans do not exist.

Of course they exist.

The Dominican Republic is not racially uniform. Nobody serious is arguing that every Dominican looks the same.

The real question is different.

Why does the phrase “white Dominicans exist” appear so often as a defensive response specifically when Blackness gets named clearly?

And why does the panic around Blackness often seem strongest among the people standing closest to its social penalties?

That is not random.

And once you start paying attention to it, the whole conversation changes.

As a Dominican American, I grew up watching this happen in real time, even before I fully understood what I was looking at.

The darker people around me were often the ones most urgently trying to explain why they were not Black. Not African American. Not Haitian. Not “that kind” of Dominican.

At the time, I did not yet have the language for it.

Now I do.

Because the issue is not demographic existence.

The issue is social function.

How is the phrase “white Dominicans exist” actually being used emotionally and rhetorically?

Most of the time, it is not neutral clarification.

It appears as a shield. A way of interrupting the conversation before Blackness becomes too structurally central.

And the panic is not evenly distributed.

That matters.

Because Blackness lands differently depending on where you sit inside the hierarchy.

If you are lighter, white-presenting, wealthier, or socially buffered from anti-Blackness, Blackness can feel more negotiable. More distant. More optional.

But if you are visibly Black, darker-skinned, or socially closer to the penalties attached to Blackness, the pressure changes.

The stakes feel closer to the body.

The fear of becoming trapped socially inside Blackness becomes more emotionally charged.

That changes how people react.

And none of this requires people to be stupid or evil.

A lot of these behaviors are adaptive.

Inherited.

Learned socially over generations.

People learn which identities receive status, safety, desirability, legitimacy, or mobility. They absorb those lessons early.

Hair politics.

“Pelo malo.”

Color labels inside families.

“Improving the race.”

Anti-Haitian distancing.

Class-coded language around phenotype and appearance.

These are not isolated comments floating randomly through Dominican culture.

They are pieces of a larger social navigation system.

That is why the conversation gets so slippery whenever race is discussed directly.

Because many Dominicans genuinely believe race works differently in the Dominican Republic than it does in the United States.

And in some ways, it does.

But race does not disappear.

It reorganizes itself.

Through nationality.

Through class.

Through migration status.

Through hair texture.

Through phenotype.

Through proximity to Haiti.

The structure survives even when people insist they are not using race.

That is why Haiti appears so quickly in these conversations.

The moment Blackness becomes structurally central, somebody suddenly needs to become “more Black,” “more foreign,” or “less Dominican.”

“You’re Haitian.”

“That’s Haitian culture.”

“That’s not Dominican.”

The comparison is not random.

It is boundary maintenance.

Because if Dominican identity positions itself partly through distance from Blackness, then somebody has to occupy the category Blackness gets projected onto most heavily.

And the hierarchy stabilizes itself from there.

That is why the denial work often gets outsourced downward.

The people closest to the penalties attached to Blackness become some of the people most invested in defending distance from it.

That is not unique to Dominicans, by the way.

You can find versions of this dynamic all over the Americas.

Colonial hierarchies survive best when they become emotionally internalized.

When people begin managing themselves from inside the structure instead of needing the structure constantly enforced from above.

That is why some of the reactions become so emotionally intense.

“We’re mixed.”

“White Dominicans exist.”

“Race is American.”

“Why are you obsessed with race?”

None of these responses actually remove Blackness from the picture.

They reveal anxiety around Blackness being structurally central to the picture.

That is the contradiction underneath the entire conversation.

People will describe anti-Black structures in detail while insisting anti-Blackness itself is not present.

They will describe hair hierarchies.

Family colorism.

Anti-Haitian rhetoric.

Blackness being treated as insult, burden, or social liability.

And then call all of it “just culture.”

But normalization hides systems from the people living inside them.

Inherited structures often feel ordinary to the people who inherited them.

That is why the reactions themselves matter.

The comments are not interruptions to the thesis.

They are demonstrations of it.

And the most revealing part of this discourse was never that white Dominicans exist.

It was watching who felt most urgently compelled to defend the distance from Blackness, and asking why.

Every time Dominican identity comes up, somebody runs in with it like they just solved algebra.

Dominicans are Black.

“We’re mixed.”

Dominicans have African ancestry.

“We’re mixed.”

Dominican anti-Blackness is real.

“We’re mixed.”

After a while, the pattern becomes hard to miss.

The sentence is not always being used to explain identity.

A lot of the time, it is being used to stop the conversation before it gets too specific.

Because being mixed does not actually answer the question people think it answers.

Almost everybody in the Americas is mixed in some way. That alone does not tell us how race is lived, understood, denied, or weaponized.

It does not tell us how people are read in the world.

It does not tell us which parts of ancestry get celebrated, which parts get softened, and which parts get buried.

It does not explain why some people can say “mixed” with complete ease, but get uncomfortable the moment Blackness is named clearly.

That is the part worth paying attention to.

Because “mixed” is not the problem.

The dodge is the problem.

Dominican identity is layered. African ancestry, European influence, Indigenous history, migration, language, religion, family stories, all of it exists in the same body. Nobody serious is denying that.

But “mixed with what?” is where the sentence starts doing real work.

Mixed with African ancestry.

Mixed with European ancestry.

Mixed with Indigenous ancestry.

Mixed through colonization, slavery, migration, survival, violence, intimacy, erasure, and culture.

So yes, Dominicans are mixed.

But if the only time you reach for “we’re mixed” is when someone says Dominicans are Black, then you are not adding nuance.

You are changing the subject.

That is why the sentence feels so slippery.

It sounds balanced.

It sounds informed.

It sounds like complexity.

But a lot of the time, it is not being used to clarify anything.

It is being used to keep Blackness at a safe distance without having to say that out loud.

And that is different.

Mixture does not cancel racial reality.

You can be mixed and still be read as Black.

You can be mixed and still have African ancestry.

You can be mixed and still participate in anti-Blackness.

You can be mixed and still inherit a whole vocabulary designed to avoid naming the Black part of yourself.

That is not contradiction.

That is the history of the Americas.

The issue is not whether Dominicans are mixed.

Of course Dominicans are mixed.

The issue is what that sentence is being asked to do.

Sometimes it is a description.

Sometimes it is a shield.

Sometimes it is a softer substitute for clarity.

Sometimes it is a way to say, “please do not make me look directly at the African part.”

And once you see that, the whole conversation changes.

Because “mixed” does not end the conversation.

It starts the next one.

If the mixture is real, then we should be able to name all of it clearly.

Not just the parts that feel safe.

Not just the parts that sound romantic.

Not just the parts that let people avoid the word Black.

That is why “we’re mixed” proves nothing by itself.

It does not tell me what you understand.

Not because it was new.
But because it was clear.

It said, in so many words:

Black in the U.S. equals African American.
So no, Dominicans are not Black.

I’ve seen versions of that my whole life. Different wording, same idea.
But something about seeing it written that plainly made me realize something.

Maybe it’s time to clean this up.

The comment was useful because it said the quiet part plainly.

It did not just reject Dominican Blackness.
It revealed the definition being used to reject it.

That right there is not just a disagreement.

It is a definition problem.

Because when people say “Black,” they are not always talking about the same thing.
Sometimes they are talking about race.
Sometimes culture.
Sometimes nationality.
Sometimes a history that is specific to the United States.

And sometimes, without saying it, they collapse all of that into a single category.

“African American.”

So the conversation breaks before it even starts.

Because if “Black” only means African American, then anyone outside of that specific history gets pushed out of the category by default.

Dominicans.
Haitians.
Afro-Latinos.
Africans.
Caribbeans.
Afro-Brazilians.

All of them become something else.

Something adjacent.
Something close, but not quite.

And once that happens, people are not actually arguing about identity.

They are arguing inside two different definitions without realizing it.

That is why the conversation never lands.

Because the word keeps shifting depending on who is using it.

But if you step back from the argument and look at it more simply, the definition becomes a lot clearer.

Black refers broadly to people of African descent and to the communities formed across the African diaspora through history, migration, enslavement, colonization, and culture.

That includes African Americans.
It also includes everyone else whose lineage traces back to African descent across different regions, languages, nations, and histories.

It is not limited to one country.
It is not created by one national story.
And it definitely did not start in the United States.

Ellis Island did not invent Black people.

Blackness existed long before American borders, long before American categories, long before anyone tried to contain it inside a single national experience.

African American is a specific identity.
A real one. A powerful one. A distinct cultural and historical experience.

But it is not the entirety of Blackness.

Dominican is a nationality and a cultural identity.
African American is an ethnic and cultural identity.
Black is broader than both.

These categories can overlap without canceling each other out.

That is the part people keep missing.

You can be Dominican and Black.
You can be American and Black.
You can be Haitian and Black.
You can be Brazilian and Black.
You can belong to a specific culture and still be part of a broader racial and diasporic history.

These things are not contradictions.

They are layers.

As a Dominican American, I have had to learn this in real time.

In the United States, the world does not pause to ask which national story your family prefers. It reads race through history, body, culture, and power.

That does not make me less Dominican.

It just means I learned the limits of the story I was handed.

Dominican identity is layered.
African ancestry. European influence. Indigenous history. All of it is real.

But none of that removes the African lineage at the center of it.

And that is the part people keep trying to negotiate around.

Not because it is unclear.

But because it is uncomfortable.

“Mixed” is easy.
It feels neutral.
It feels inclusive.
It lets people move around the conversation without having to land anywhere specific.

But “Black” is direct.

It asks people to sit with something without softening it first.

And once you see that pattern, the reaction starts to make more sense.

The pushback is not really about accuracy.

It is about what people are willing, or unwilling, to include in the definition.

For me, the conversation got a lot simpler once I stopped chasing every version of the argument.

I stopped trying to adjust the definition depending on who I was talking to.

I stopped trying to make it fit every room.

I just stuck with what holds.

Dominicans are Black.

Not as a performance.
Not as a trend.
Not as something that needs to be re-explained every time someone disagrees.

Just as a way to keep the definition from shifting every five minutes.

The more people push back on that, the more they show why the clarity is needed in the first place.

The sentence stays still because the definitions keep moving.

I have never experienced it that way.

Part of the reason is simple. I am not standing in the same place as a lot of the people talking about it.

I am Dominican American. I was born and raised in the United States. My family is from Samaná. My ancestors were Black Americans who arrived on the island before the Dominican Republic even existed as a country. So the questions I have about Dominican identity did not come from theory. They came from my own life.

They came from growing up around things that did not fully make sense to me at first.

All four of my grandparents spoke English. My parents and their siblings did not. My family had English last names. We were Protestant in a mostly Catholic Dominican world. My grandmother sang English hymns in a Spanish-speaking country. As a kid, I could feel that none of this was random, even if I did not yet know how to explain it.

I did not grow up with the language for it. I grew up with the evidence of it.

That matters.

Because I think a lot of people imagine identity as something you figure out later, once you read enough, once you study enough, once you find the right words. That is not how it worked for me. For me, it started earlier than that. It started with the feeling that my family was carrying a history nobody had clearly handed to me.

And it started with knowing, very early, that race was going to be something I would have to deal with for the rest of my life.

Not because I wanted it to be. Not because I was obsessed with it. But because there was no realistic way around it.

I was growing up in the United States, where race is never far from anything. I was growing up with Dominican parents, inside a Dominican family that already carried its own particular contradictions. I was growing up with English last names, English-speaking grandparents, and a family history that did not sit neatly inside the version of Dominicanness most people seemed to assume. So even before I had the history, I had the friction. Even before I had the explanation, I had the feeling that this subject was going to keep finding me.

It did.

That is one of the reasons I see Dominican identity differently.

The other is Samaná.

Samaná is not just a place in my life. It is one of the main reasons the whole question looks different to me in the first place.

My family’s relationship to the Dominican Republic does not begin with the same assumptions that shape a lot of mainstream Dominican identity talk. My Black American ancestors arrived there when the territory was still under Haitian rule, about twenty years before the Dominican Republic became a nation. So for me, Dominican identity was never something I first understood as one clean national category and then later had to connect to race. It was never split apart that way.

That history was there from the beginning.

Not as an aside. Not as a complication. It was already there in the movement of my family. It was already there in the road my ancestors took into Dominican life. It was already there in the fact that the story I inherited began in a different place than the story many people are taught to center.

That changes how I hear a lot of things.

It changes how I hear people say Dominican identity is “complicated,” as if that word explains anything by itself.

It changes how I hear people talk about mixture in a way that names ancestry without really naming history.

It changes how I hear people smooth over tensions that have shaped the country for generations.

And it changes how I understand my own life.

Because for me, being Dominican was never something that could be peeled away from race. History did not hand me those as separate things. My family did not hand me those as separate things. My life never gave me the luxury of treating them like separate things.

That does not mean I think every Dominican person has the exact same experience I do. It does not mean I think everyone’s family entered Dominican history the way mine did. It does not mean I think all Dominicans are identical.

It means I am speaking from where I am actually standing.

And from where I am standing, race is not some extra detail you tack on at the end once the “real” Dominican story has already been told. It is part of the story at the beginning. It is part of the country’s foundation. It is part of the language, the music, the religion, the migration, the family histories, the silences, and the contradictions. It is everywhere.

And that has consequences.

It affects what people are taught. It affects what gets emphasized and what gets glossed over. It affects what children grow up hearing proudly and what they grow up hearing only in fragments, or not at all. It affects what sits in plain sight for generations without being fully named.

Part of the reason I did not grow up with a clear understanding of my own family history is because anti-Blackness does not only shape public life. It shapes what families learn to downplay. It shapes what gets softened. It shapes what gets left half-explained. It creates the kind of atmosphere where a family can be living inside a history and still not have all the words for it.

That is not abstract to me.

That is personal.

It is personal because I know what it feels like to grow up surrounded by clues that nobody could quite put together for you.

It is personal because I know what it feels like to realize later that some of what you thought were just family quirks were actually traces of a much bigger story.

It is personal because I know what it feels like to go looking for yourself in the history and find out that part of what made the search so hard in the first place was the discomfort people had around naming certain truths cleanly.

So when I say I see Dominican identity differently, I do not mean that I am trying to be difficult. I do not mean that I am trying to force confusion where none exists. I mean that my life placed me at a different angle, and from that angle, certain things become impossible not to see.

I see Dominican identity through the diaspora. I see it through Samaná. I see it through my family’s Black American ancestry. I see it through growing up in the United States, where race names you whether you feel ready for it or not. I see it through the distance between the story I was handed and the one I had to go find.

That does something to you.

It makes the easier versions of the story feel thin.

It makes certain silences harder to tolerate.

It makes certain evasions feel less like nuance and more like fear.

I do not write about Dominican identity from a neutral place. I write about it from a lived one.

I write about it as someone whose family history reached the island before the nation did.

I write about it as someone who grew up with evidence before explanation.

I write about it as someone for whom Dominicanness and race were never separate categories that later had to be stitched together by politics or theory.

They were already together in the bloodline. Already together in the history. Already together in the questions that shaped my life.

That is why my perspective sounds the way it does.

That is why I cannot go back to the cleaner, safer, easier versions of the story.

Because once you realize that your own family is living proof of something the larger culture still struggles to fully face, it becomes very hard to pretend that the half-said version was ever enough.

“Dominicans are Black.”

And I know it lands heavy for some people, so I want to explain what I actually mean when I say it.

Not to convince anyone.
Just to make it clear.

First, the obvious things.

I’m not saying Dominicans aren’t Dominican.
I’m not saying every Dominican is Black.
I’m not saying white Dominicans don’t exist.
I’m not saying people don’t have European or Taíno ancestry.

None of that is the point.

What I’m saying is simpler than people make it.

Blackness in the Dominican Republic is foundational.

Not a side note.
Not an exception.
Not something recent.
Not something imported from somewhere else.

It’s been there from the beginning.

For me, saying that brings clarity.

It makes my life make sense.
It makes my family history make sense.
It makes Samaná make sense.
It makes my last name, my upbringing, and my experiences line up in a way they didn’t before.

And that matters to me.

Because growing up, when I went to the Dominican Republic, Dominicans looked like me.

That part was never confusing.

So when I came back to the United States and heard people say, “you don’t look Dominican,” it always felt off.

Not offensive. Just… disconnected.

Like the sentence didn’t match anything I actually knew from life.

It didn’t match what I saw with my own eyes.
It didn’t match my family.
It didn’t match the country I knew.

And that’s where the tension really comes from.

Because Blackness keeps getting treated like something optional.

Something to soften.
Something to distance from.
Something to explain away.

Something that can be there, but not centered.

If Blackness wasn’t being pushed to the side like that, the sentence “Dominicans are Black” wouldn’t feel so charged.

It would just sound obvious.

And part of why this matters to me is personal.

Anti-Blackness is part of why I didn’t grow up knowing my own family history clearly.

Histories like mine become easier to bury when Blackness is treated like something to move away from.

That’s the part people don’t always talk about.

It doesn’t just shape identity.

It shapes memory.

It makes whole family lines harder to trace.
It makes histories harder to pass down honestly.
It makes silence easier to inherit.

So I don’t feel obligated to protect narratives that made my own history harder for me to understand.

That’s a big part of why I say this the way I do.

For me, “Dominicans are Black” isn’t provocation.

It’s clarity.

It’s the cleanest, most honest frame I’ve found to make sense of the country, the culture, and my own story.

People can identify however they want.

I’m not forcing anybody to say anything.

I’m just telling you why I say it.

And I say it because it makes everything line up.

Not perfectly.

But honestly.

“You don’t look Dominican.”

Sometimes it’s casual. Sometimes it’s confused. Sometimes it lands like a compliment. Sometimes it lands like a correction.

But it always lands the same way.

Like I’ve somehow stepped outside of something I belong to.

It happened again recently in Miami.

I was at La Ventanita, talking to a man I had just met. He was Cuban and Jewish. At some point I met his mother, a white Cuban woman, and after her son introduced me as Dominican, she looked at me and said, “You don’t look Dominican. You look American.”

And I remember thinking: yeah, that’s the whole thing right there.

Because first of all, I knew what she meant. “American,” in that moment, was doing a lot of work. A softer way of saying Black. A lot of people do that. They say “American” when what they really mean is that you look like a Black American to them.

But the interesting part is that she also was not fully wrong.

I am American.

I am Black.

I am Dominican.

And I descend from African Americans through Samaná.

That is exactly why these moments are always so revealing. People are often circling something real, but the categories they use to describe it are scrambled.

I told her I could say the exact same thing back to her.

Because I could.

I could have looked at her and said, “You don’t look Cuban. You look American.”

And that is what makes the whole phrase collapse. The second you reverse it, people can hear how strange it sounds.

Because what does it even mean to “look” like a nationality?

That’s the contradiction underneath all of this.

Because the same people will tell you, without hesitation, that Dominicans are mixed.

We say it all the time. It’s one of the most common ways people describe the country.

Dominicans are mixed.
All shades.
Everything in one.

Cool.

But then a Dominican shows up who looks too Black. Too African American-adjacent. Too clearly connected to that side of the inheritance.

And suddenly the tone shifts.

Now it’s: “You don’t look Dominican.”

So which one is it?

Are Dominicans mixed?

Or do Dominicans have a look that I somehow missed?

Because those two ideas do not sit together as cleanly as people think.

You cannot claim diversity in theory and then get confused when you see it in real life.

And it’s not just that phrase.

It shows up in small ways all the time, especially in Miami.

I’ll speak to someone in Spanish and they’ll answer me in English. I’ll answer back in Spanish again, and they’ll answer in English again, like the Spanish coming out of my mouth could not possibly belong there. Sometimes people say things around me in Spanish assuming I won’t understand, because they have already decided what kind of person I am before I even open my mouth.

If you’re Afro-Latino, you know that pattern.

It’s not always aggressive. A lot of the time it’s casual. Automatic. Surface-level innocent.

That’s what makes it so normal.

And that’s what makes it so revealing.

After a while, you realize the phrase isn’t just observation.

It’s a filter.

A quiet way of saying: you don’t fit the version of Dominican that I recognize.

And that version usually has a look to it. A range that feels acceptable. A visual script people are used to seeing.

Step outside of that, and suddenly you become an exception. Or a question. Or something that needs to be explained.

But I’m not an exception.

I’m part of the full picture.

The same history that made the Dominican Republic what it is made me too.

The same mixtures people talk about in abstract show up in real people. In real faces. In real families. In real lives.

Not just in theory.

And that’s part of what makes the “American” comment so interesting to me. Because in my case, the African American side of the story is not imagined. It is literally part of the lineage. That is the Samaná story. That is the inheritance. That is the history people keep bumping into without always having the language to describe it.

So when someone says, “You don’t look Dominican,” what they’re really reacting to is not just me.

They’re reacting to a whole history they have not fully made peace with.

They’re reacting to Blackness that does not sit where they expect it to sit.

They’re reacting to a Dominican face that forces a wider definition of Dominican than the one they were handed.

And I don’t take it personally.

If anything, it tells me something about the system we’re all inside of.

Because none of us invented these ideas on our own.

We inherited them.

We inherited the language. The assumptions. The shortcuts people use to make sense of identity.

Some of us just start noticing them earlier than others.

That’s really why I talk about this.

Not to argue with people. Not to win anything.

Just to point out the patterns that are already there.

The ones that show up in everyday conversations like this one.

The ones that show up when somebody hears your Spanish and still answers in English.

The ones that show up when somebody looks at your face and decides your nationality needs correcting.

The ones that keep repeating because they sound normal to the people saying them.

“You don’t look Dominican.”

I hear it.

I understand where it comes from.

But I also know what it reveals.

And once you see it clearly, you can’t really unsee it.

“Dominicans are mixed”

That was supposed to answer everything. On the surface, it sounded complete. It sounded reasonable. It sounded like the kind of answer that should settle the conversation.

But it never actually did.

Because depending on where I was, that same identity never landed the same way. In some rooms, I was clearly Black. In others, I was “too American.” In others, I wasn’t “really Dominican like that”.

Same person. Same background. Different reactions.

At a certain point, you stop thinking the issue is you. You start realizing the definition itself isn’t stable.

Because if something is real, it shouldn’t shift every time the environment changes.

“Black” is one of those words.

Depending on the conversation, it can mean a racial category, a cultural identity, a national experience, or a political label. Most of the time, nobody stops to clarify which one they’re using.

So people end up arguing, not because they’re seeing different things, but because they’re using the same word inside different systems.

What looks like disagreement is usually a structural mismatch.

The word stays the same.

The meaning underneath it keeps changing.

And once that happens, the conversation can’t actually resolve. It just loops.

What I started noticing is that nobody argues the idea that Dominicans are mixed. That part is always accepted. It’s almost automatic.

But the moment you say something like “Dominicans are Black,” the tone changes. The conversation tightens. People start explaining, qualifying, correcting.

That reaction is the interesting part.

Because it tells you what part of the identity people are comfortable with, and what part they aren’t.

After seeing that pattern enough times, I stopped trying to argue every angle of it. I stopped getting into percentages, mixtures, or long explanations about history.

Not because those things don’t matter, but because they don’t actually solve the confusion.

The confusion isn’t coming from lack of information.

It’s coming from a definition that keeps shifting depending on who’s using it.

So I started looking for something simpler. Something that didn’t move every time the conversation did.

For me, the clearest way to think about it is this:

Black refers to people of African descent, especially within the African diaspora.

It’s simple.

But more importantly, it’s stable.

It works whether you’re talking about Nigerians, Haitians, African Americans, or Afro-Latinos. It doesn’t depend on appearance alone. It doesn’t depend on nationality. And it doesn’t shift depending on who’s asking the question.

It holds.

And once the definition holds, the conversation stops breaking.

It also doesn’t erase anything else.

Dominican identity is layered. There’s African ancestry, European influence, Indigenous history. All of that is real.

But acknowledging that doesn’t require you to minimize one part to make the rest more comfortable.

And that’s where most of the tension actually comes from.

Not complexity.

Avoidance.

Because “mixed” is easy to agree on. It feels neutral. It feels inclusive.

But “Black” is specific.

It forces a level of clarity that people aren’t always ready to sit with.

And once you see that, the conversation gets a lot simpler.

You’re not trying to win an argument.

You’re just refusing to let the definition keep shifting.

At some point, I stopped trying to become what different rooms expected me to be, and just stuck with what held up regardless of where I was.

That’s the only thing that’s actually stable.

Dominicans are Black.

Not as a debate.

Just as a way to keep the definition from changing every five minutes.

And honestly, the more people push back on that, the more it proves why that stability is needed in the first place.

A cheap DNA test.
One of those “why not” decisions you make without thinking too much about it.

I remember ordering it, taking the test, sending it off… and then life just kept moving.

A month later, the world shut down.

COVID hit.
Everything went remote.
Everything slowed down.

I was working in insurance at the time, so I was lucky. I kept working. I even switched jobs that May, still remote, just moving from one company to another while the world was trying to figure itself out.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, my results came back.

I remember opening them.
Scrolling through the regions.
Seeing West Africa. Central Africa. The breakdown.

It was cool.

It confirmed something I had always felt, something you kind of know just from growing up, from history, from looking around and understanding how things move.

It explained where I came from.

But it didn’t explain who I was.

I had grown up going to Samaná.

Not as a discovery.
Not as something new.

As something familiar.

As a kid, I would spend summers there.
Long stretches of time where life felt slower, closer, more connected.

The last time I went before all of this…
was January of 2005.

I was 14 years old.
I went with my grandfather.

And then life happened.

Years passed.
School. Work. Everything in between.

And somehow, without realizing it, there was a gap.

From January 2005…
to July 2023.

Eighteen years.

The DNA results sat with me during that time.

Not physically.
But in the background.

They answered one question.
But left another one untouched.

Because knowing the regions…
is not the same as understanding the story.

Life kept moving.

New job.
Grad school.
Data analytics.

Structure. Systems. Patterns.

Everything made sense in that world.

But that other question…
the one about identity, inheritance, culture…

that one didn’t have a framework yet.

In 2023, everything shifted.

My grandmother passed.

And I went back to the Dominican Republic.

That trip changed something.

Not all at once.
Not in a dramatic way.

Just enough.

I started in Santo Domingo.

I walked through the Colonial Zone.
Took tours.
Learned about Dominican history the way it’s usually taught.

1844.

Independence.
Los Trinitarios.

I remember feeling proud.
Connected in a way that made sense.

It was history.
It was real.
It was something you could point to.

But even then…

something still didn’t click.

I understood the country.

But I still didn’t understand myself.

After that, I went back to Samaná.

Not for the first time.

But for the first time… as an adult asking questions.

That’s when I heard about it.

1824.

The migration.

Free Black Americans leaving the United States and settling in Samaná.

Building something.
Carrying something with them.

I remember trying to talk to my family about it.

Fragments.
Pieces.
Things that sounded familiar but weren’t fully formed.

At the time, I didn’t have the language to explain why.

Now I do.

But back then, it just felt like something important was sitting just out of reach.

In February of 2024, I went back again.

This time, on purpose.

I stayed in Las Terrenas for a week.
Moved between Samaná and Santo Domingo.

Not as a tourist.

Just walking.
Talking to people.
Looking at the land.
Trying to understand what was there.

I wasn’t writing a book.

I wasn’t building anything.

I was just trying to figure out who I was.

And somewhere in the middle of that…

everything started to connect.

Not loudly.

Not all at once.

Just enough to feel it.

Then I remembered.

I had already done the test.

I already had the results.

They had been sitting there the whole time.

I looked at them again.

But this time… differently.

Not as percentages.
Not as regions.

As patterns.

As movement.

As something that didn’t start with me.

And that’s when it hit me.

I had the answer before I had the language.

What I saw in those results…

was the same movement I had just spent years trying to understand.

West Africa.
Central Africa.

The Americas.

The Caribbean.

The United States.

The Dominican Republic.

Samaná.

Not separate things.

One path.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

The summers.
The silence.
The fragments.

The history I learned in Santo Domingo.
The story I found in Samaná.
The data I had sitting in my account since 2020.

It wasn’t a discovery.

It was recognition.

Some things don’t disappear.

They wait.

They repeat.

Until you learn how to read them.

Now I’m in Miami.

Sitting at a ventanita with a cafecito.

Thinking about how all of this started.

A cheap DNA test.
A random decision.
A moment that didn’t feel important at the time.

And how it somehow led here.

To understanding something that had been there the whole time.

It’s crazy how something that small can change everything.

And at the same time…

none of it was random.

You don’t have to earn the moment for it to matter.

The moment already matters.

It’s easy to talk to people. Easy to connect. Easy to laugh. You can sit down next to someone and end up in a full conversation without needing a reason. You don’t have to schedule connection or plan it out.

You just step into it.

That part stays with you.

But if you’ve lived in the United States, something else shows up too.

Because as easy as it is to be there, it’s harder to build there. Things move slower. Systems aren’t as structured. Opportunities don’t come with the same speed or predictability.

You start to feel the difference in how life moves, not just how it feels.

And that’s where the tension starts.

Because now you’re not comparing two countries. You’re experiencing two completely different ways of living.

One where life moves fast, but connection feels harder to access.

One where connection is natural, but progress moves differently.

And if you’re Dominican and American, that tension doesn’t stay outside of you.

It becomes internal.

Because you didn’t just spend time in both places.

You inherited both.

One side of you was shaped to build. To work. To create structure. To move forward, even when it’s uncomfortable.

The other side of you was shaped to belong. To prioritize people. To value presence, conversation, and community in a way that isn’t tied to productivity.

Neither one is wrong.

But they don’t move the same way.

At some point, you realize you’re trying to live inside both at once.

That’s when it clicks.

You didn’t just grow up in two places.

You grew up inside two different definitions of what life is supposed to feel like.

And for me, that changed how I see my future.

My work will live in Miami. That’s where I build. That’s where that part of me belongs.

But my life, the part that has to do with family, with presence, with actually feeling the moments as they happen…

That’s going to live in the Dominican Republic.

Because I don’t just want a life that moves forward.

I want a life that I can actually feel while I’m inside it.

And for me, that means learning how to live between both speeds.

Same sentence. Different people. Same reaction.

Not in a surprising way. In a predictable way.

Every time I say “Dominicans are Black,” the same responses show up like clockwork.
“We not Black.”
“We mixed.”

Charts. Percentages. Tone shifts. Defensiveness. Outrage.

Same cycle. Different comment section.

And every time it happens, people assume the fight is about what was said.

It’s not.

It’s about where it was said.

Threads isn’t a conversation space. It’s a pressure chamber.

It takes layered, inherited identity and squeezes it into one sentence. No room for history. No room for family. No room for contradiction. Just reaction.

One sentence cannot carry an island.

Dominican identity isn’t one thing. It’s regional. It’s generational. It’s shaped by migration, class, color, silence, and survival. It lives differently in Santiago than it does in Samaná. Differently in the Bronx than it does in Santo Domingo. Differently in my grandmother’s house than it does online.

None of that fits in a slogan.

So when people argue in the comments, they’re not actually arguing with me. They’re arguing with the compression. They’re reacting to something that feels too small to hold everything they carry.

That’s why the responses feel disproportionate.

Nobody is mad at a sentence.
They’re mad at what the sentence threatens to simplify.

For me, this isn’t abstract.

My family history runs through Samaná. Black American migration. English in the house. Spanish outside. Stories that didn’t always line up cleanly with national narratives. Identity that never fit neatly into boxes.

So when I say “Dominicans are Black,” I’m not issuing a manifesto. I’m naming an inheritance that has always been complicated, contextual, and unfinished.

I’m also not speaking for everyone. I never was.

But the internet doesn’t do nuance. It does sides.

That’s where humor comes in.

I joke about it not because it’s funny, but because humor lowers the temperature. Jokes slip past defenses that arguments slam into. People laugh, then think, instead of bracing for impact.

Humor doesn’t resolve anything. It just opens the door.

And that’s the part people miss.

These conversations don’t fail because Dominicans are confused about who they are. They fail because comment sections aren’t built to hold unresolved history.

You can bring all the facts you want. All the studies. All the correct language. It still collapses, because facts don’t land cleanly when people feel unseen.

This isn’t a Dominican problem.
It’s a container problem.

The same thing happens everywhere identity meets speed. Politics. Race. Diaspora. Culture. As soon as meaning gets forced into slogans, outrage fills the gaps.

So no, I’m not surprised by the reactions anymore.

If anything, they confirm what I already know.

Some conversations need more room than the internet gives them.

Being Dominican-American and African American means living inside two histories that America rarely tells together. One is marked by ship manifests, sugarcane, and colonial tongues. The other is marked by auction blocks, cotton fields, and Jim Crow signs. Both are mine. Both still breathe in me. My existence is proof that the same empire could divide a people, give them different names, and still have their blood meet again in a future it could never control.

But growing up Dominican-American is its own kind of in-between. In the Dominican Republic, you’re not considered from there. You’re a visitor, a gringo. Sometimes even your own people will look at your face, hear your accent, and decide you don’t belong. If your last name doesn’t sound Spanish, they might call you hatiano without ever asking your story.

It’s not just translating identity, it’s translating for family members who don’t speak English. It’s standing between your parents and the bank teller, or the doctor, or the government office, making sure they’re understood.

And when you’re also of African American descent, it doesn’t make it easier. American Blacks sometimes treat you differently, too. You may look like them, but the culture you carry is different.

People never assume you speak Spanish, and sometimes they say things about you in Spanish, not knowing you understand every word.

I was in a Dominican bakery once, waiting for pastelitos, when two older customers looked over and whispered, “Ese moreno no parece de aquí.” One of them smirked and said something low about “la gente de allá,” assuming I wouldn’t catch it. I smiled, paid for my food, and answered the cashier in clear, calm Spanish. The silence that followed said everything.

I’ve had to sit with that sting, hearing racist remarks from my own people in a language that’s supposed to feel like home.

The thing nobody tells you is that you spend most of your life translating, not just words but your right to exist exactly as you are. You explain why your Spanish carries the rhythm of the Caribbean instead of the lisp of Madrid, why your soul food tastes like coconut milk. You learn to show how bachata and gospel can live on the same playlist, how Charlie Wilson and Juan Luis Guerra can share the same breath without contradiction.

And somewhere between explaining yourself and simply being, you realize you’re not just a bridge between two worlds. You’re living proof they’ve always been connected.

Every time I sit with my elders and hear about Samaná, about migration, about survival, I see the threads weaving back centuries. We were never strangers. We were family all along, scattered, renamed, and still finding our way home.

That’s the space I live in, the space between stories. Not here or there, but both. Not a fraction of either, but whole in ways the world doesn’t always know how to measure.

Maybe I was never meant to choose between two stories. Maybe I was meant to write the bridge.

Some call it in-between. I call it home. And now that I know the full extent of my identity, I don’t see it as a burden anymore. I see it as my superpower.
